How to dump your UMD games so you can play them from your memory stick

PSP offers a wide variety of games and there are so many good titles in the market today and all of these games have a single similarity and that is their price. This article will discuss on minimizing the cost on Psp games with playing the game directly from the memory stick. But before we’ll go to detail, let us first discuss the two important terms that we will be using in this article. First is UMD - When Sony released the PlayStation Portable, they also unleashed a new, proprietary media format called the universal media disc (UMD). The universal media disc works just like a typical DVD disc but unlike a DVD's regional coding or third party encryption technology, Sony developed its own copy protection. For the UMD, Sony created a protection system that uses a unique ID for each disc (using 128-bit encryption) and the ID of the PSP itself. This kind of disc is much more powerful that a typical DVD but it’s not yet available in the market for other uses. The second term is the ISO - (.iso) is a disk image of an ISO 9660 file system. ISO 9660 is an international standard originally devised for storing data on CD-ROM. More loosely, it refers to any optical disc image, even a UDF image. As is typical for disc images, in addition to the data files that are contained in the ISO image, it also contains all the filesystem metadata, including boot code, structures, and attributes. All of this information is contained in a single file. These properties make it an attractive alternative to physical media for the distribution of software that requires this additional information as it is simple to retrieve over the Internet.

PSP games are expensive, that’s why playing UMD games from memory stick is much preferred than buying games. All you need is a memory stick with enough memory to store games and of course a PSP. Here’s a list of instructions on how to do it:

1. First you are going to need an ISO file of the game you want to play. You can download all the latest games from many sites, most will charge you a one time fee and then you can download as many as you wish forever. All you need to do is to spend some time searching in the internet. But be careful some sites contain malwares and viruses that can infect your computer. Make sure that you a good antivirus if you decide to visit all of these sites.

2. You’ll need a small program that will run the game from your memory stick, you can download it from http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/13 it is called PSP RunUMD UMD Emulator v0.8C. (This is a homebrew application and may not run on PSP with firmware version higher than 1.50) Download it and put it onto your memory stick. Follow the instructions that came with the file and put it in the exact folder it says.

3. You’ll have to create a folder called ISO; this is where your psp games will go. Connect your PSP to your PC and drag and drop the files into the ISO folder. Now switch on the PSP and select the PSP RunUMD UMD Emulator v0.8C from the memory stick. Once the program is running you should see the games you have in the ISO folder. Just select it to start playing.

This is just one of the steps that you could follow in playing games from your memory stick. There are other programs like RunUMD out there, all you need to do is some reading on how it works. Just follow them and it will work out fine. If not, you could always refer to the internet for help. Remember that higher cost doesn’t necessarily mean greater pleasure. Playing games from your memory stick offers the same gaming pleasure than buying costly umd games.

How to Backup your PS1 Games for your PSP

How to Backup your PS1 Games for your PSP

PSP can now play almost all games even games for other consoles. SEGA, GB, SNES, almost everything. And now, an addition to the list: PS1 games. But before you can play them you first need to do some tweaking. Here’s a guide on how:
This is a quick guide to show you how to convert your old PSone games (disc or iso) to play on your PSP. This works on Dark_Alex custom firmware. Before you start, make sure that you have the following requirements:
-PSP w/Dark_AleX custom firmware flashed
-MagicDisc (free, if you have images of your game discs use this to mount them)
http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-history.htm
-Auto Popstation4 (creates ISO file of game disc.. converts iso to PBP)
http://dl.qj.net/AutoPopstation4-General-Tools-Utilities-PSP-Tools-Utilities-on-PC/pg/12/fid/12400/catid/193

1. Download Auto Popstation4
2. Extract it
3. Put your PSOne disc in your pc or mount the image w/your virtual drive application (magicdisc)

4. Go to the folder where we extracted Auto Popstation4. You should see a .bat file and also a folder called CoreData. Be sure there are not any ISOs in this folder, or else Auto Popstation4 will go to the menus for creating the eboot.pbp; if there is no iso it will give you options to capture an iso from your cd/dvd drive

5. Run the Autopopstation4.bat

6. On the menu, choose Option 1 to create an ISO

7. Next, you may get an error (you will the first time since it has not been configured), click OK on it. Then IsoProducer should open up. We need to configure it, use the suggested settings showing the Command Box and then click Make ISO

8. I usually save it to the same folder as the Autopopstation4.bat file and the coredata folder. (the batch file needs the iso to be here, also be sure not to use spaces in the filename)

9. Once the iso is created, rerun the Autopopstation4.bat again, this time we will get a different menu to create make our PSP ready game

10. Type the iso’s file name when asked, it will list all ISO files in the folder where the batch file is again be sure that your iso's file name does not contain spaces.
11. Then choose the compression level, 0 = none, 9 = max; remember that the more compression the longer the load times or possibility it won't even load.
12. Next, it will ask for a name for the game, this will show up on your PSP > Game menu

13. Next, it will ask for part of the game’s name to find the appropriate game code. After you hit enter it should populate a list of game codes; the code is the first number (ie SLUS01251). The command prompt is asking if you want to run again, just choose N

14. Now you will be asked for the game code (again, the one we found from above, ie SLUS01251) and hit Enter

15. Finally, it will ask if you want to make a Manual for the game using the PSPDocument Maker or by using any png file in the CoreData\DocmakerImages (must be named 0000.png to 9999.png).
16. Once you choose how to make the manual, it will confirm your settings, just Y to start and it will start processing away. Once it’s done, you can hit any key and it will open up the results folder w/your newly converted PSone game now ready for your PSP.

How to play music and games at the same time

PSP is a multi-featured hand-held device. It is not just designed for gaming but also for playing media files. PlayStation Portable's audio player supports a number of audio codes, including ATRAC, AAC, MP3, and WMA, and has the option to be played with or without a set of five visualizations. The image viewer will display several common image formats including JPEG, Bitmap, and PNG.

MPEG-4 and AVC video formats are also compatible with PlayStation Portable. With reasonable video and audio bit-rate settings (a resolution of 320×240, a video bit rate of 500 Kb per second, and an audio sampling rate of 22050 Hz) a 22-minute video file is roughly 55 MB, enough to fit on a Memory Stick Duo as small as a 64 MB. At the same rate, a hundred-minute feature film can fit on a 256 MB Memory Stick. As of firmware update version 3.30, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile video files of the following sizes can be played: 720×480, 352×480, and 480×272. Many video files, both free-to-distribute and copyrighted, have been encoded for the PlayStation Portable and are available on the Internet.

PSP doesn’t just enable you to play or view media files but also offers a wide connectivity. It has wi-fi capability, which allows users for multiplayer games and network connectivity. It also has an IrDA port for infrared connection and USB port for connecting the device to other devices like a pc.

However, with this full-feature capability, many users still want to find ways to maximize their PSP’s. There are many who are asking if it is possible to play music and games at the same time and if it is, how to do it.

Truly, PSP has still many features to be revealed. It is also capable of multi-tasking (which means doing two or more tasks at once). Yes. It is possible to play music and games at the same time. How to do it? Well, here are the steps that you could try out:

1. Download a plugin irsmp3.prx
Link: http://forums.pspcrazy.com/forums/psp-homebrew-discussion/77491-plugins-playstation-portable-custom-firmware-only.html

2. On your root of your memory card make a folder called " seplugins " without quotes. MS/seplugins

3. Put the irsmp3.prx in the folder seplugins.

4. Open a text editor (sample: notepad) and copy/paste this:

ms0:/seplugins/irsmp3.prx
ms0:/seplugins/
ms0:/seplugins/
ms0:/seplugins/
ms0:/seplugins/

Save this as "game.txt" on the "seplugins" folder in your PSP.

Do the extact same thing but this time save it as "vsh.txt" on the "seplugins" folder.

6. Do a hard-reset on your psp, then turn it on again while holding the Right shoulder button to go into recovery mode. Go to the "Plugins" option, select the "irsmp3.prx [GAME]" ("irsmp3.prx [VSH]" for using it in XMB) option and click X. It should say "(Enabled)". Go back, and then Exit.

Start your game. Wait until it loads and then click note(the Button with a musical icon)+Left shoulder button. Thats it!
You can also use it while you’re on the XMB, on the Internet, while in USB connection and etc.

Here are the controls on how to use it.

(The Note button is to the left of select)
Note + Left Trigger = pause/resume playback
Note + Right Trigger = switch playback mode between random and sequential
Note + D-Pad Left = previous song (only in sequential mode)
Note + D-Pad Right = next song
Note + D-Pad Up = Volume up (for the mp3)
Note + D-Pad Down = Volume Down (for the mp3)
Note + Triangle = Change CPU speed
Note + Square = Toggle On Screen Display (default off)
Note + Circle = Reload list of mp3 files (needed if you change the files in the music folder using USB)
(when READY is displayed in the bottom left hand corner, press Note+ Left Trigger to start playback)
Note + Cross = Change brightness level (from current up to maximum)

One frequently asked question about this is that If you psp is doing two things at once, does it affect its performance? Well fortunately, there are many comments and testimonials of the people who have tried this that it doesn’t actually slow down the psp and it works great with games.

How to Upgrade your Psp from 1.5 to 3.02 for PS1 games

The potential of PSP is truly limitless; its gaming strength is not only powered by the great titles released for the console but it can also play games designed for other consoles like SEGA or GB by using emulators. Now, another gaming experience is added to the list. With a little reconfiguration, you can play PS1 games on your PSP. How to do it? Well, here’s a short guide to unleash your PSPs gaming power:

Requirements:

* Sony PSP with battery charged at least 75%.(Recommended: Full charge)
* Memory Stick Duo (Recommended: 1GB and above)

The first step to running your custom made Playstation games on your PSP involves getting the 3.02 OE-B (stands for Open Edition).

Starting with firmware 1.50

The first step is to have a PSP that is running on the 1.5 version of the PSP firmware. You can check for this by going into the System "System Settings" on your PSP, then System Information.

Important note: There is a version of the PSP's motherboard known as TA-082, which, will not work under this situation. Do not attempt to continue with the installation if you have this motherboard. For more information, see The PSP-TA082 guide.

If you don’t have a 1.5 firmware, you can downgrade your PSP. If you don’t know how, just refer to the internet, there are many guides out there on how to downgrade any version.

Installing the 3.02 OE-A firmware:

1. First, download the official Sony PSP 1.50 Firmware and 3.02 Firmware, available here:
PSP 1.50 Firmware
PSP 3.02 Firmware .
2. Rename the 1.50 Firmware to 150.PBP, and the 3.02 firmware to 302.PBP.
3. Download the 3.02 Open Edition A from the here. Extract the files to the directory of your choice.
4. Copy the files 150.PBP and 302.PBP to the directory called oeupdmaker.
5. Copy the directories 302oeflasher, 302oeflasher%, oeupdmaker, oeupdmaker% to your PSP under the /PSP/GAME/ directory.
6. Go into your Game on your PSP menu, select Memory Card, and run 3.02 OE-A Update Maker. This will extract files from the 1.50 and 3.02 firmware to create the new custom firmware.
7. Reconnect your PSP to your computer. In the owupdmaker on your PSP is a new file titled DATA.DXAR. Copy this file to the 302oeflaster directory.
8. Run the program on your PSP called 3.02 OE-A Firmware Install. Do not turn off your PSP at this moment.
9. Wait - when it's done, your PSP will reboot, and you'll have your 3.02 OE-A firmware.

Upgrade to 3.02 OE-B:

1. Download the 3.02 OE-B installer from here.
2. Extract the directory.
3. Make new folder in you PSP's directory name it GAME150.
4. Copy the folder OEB_UPDATE to your /PSP/GAME150 directory on your PSP.
5. On your PSP, run the program titled 3.02 OE-B Update.
6. That's it - it will update, then exit. You can now backup your PS1 games and play them on your PSP.

How to put multiple firmwares on your Psp

Psp is a very powerful handheld device and with its popularity, its power is even increased by countless homebrew applications available in the internet. You can play games through your memory stick, install emulators that enable you to play different games based on other consoles and personalize your psp without limits. All of this for 1 requirement, you must have a firmware version 1.5 to be able to run homebrew applications. Later firmwares are designed by Microsoft to fill up the holes of the 1.5 version that allowed homebrew to run.

If you have a firmware version 1.5, you are set to run homebrew applications but some new games that were released required a certain firmware version (eg. 3.02). With the advent of these games, there is now a need to have the latest firmware and still be able to run homebrew games. Thankfully there is now a solution to this. There is a software called devhook that allows you to do it. Devhook is a application for the PSP that allows the user to emulate firmware up to 3.11 This application will allow users to have the newest features of the homebrew locked firmwares and the ability to run new games, without having to flash a different firmware to the PSP.

Although it can be more hassle to set up than custom firmware, the risks of bricking are lower, it's very easy to undo, and you can have multiple firmware versions installed at once, allowing you to choose the one you want for any given task. It is downloadable in the internet and if you’re planning to use them on your psp, there are also a lot of resources and guides available in the internet.

Another way to install multiple firmware is the use of the much talked about Epsilon BIOS. Epsilon BIOS is a custom flash "replacement" for the Sony PSP which unleashes the full potential of your handheld, allowing you to both use homebrew software and run UMD ISO games from your Memory Stick on the latest firmware releases while also enjoying the impressive features built into the operating system such as RSS feeds, WMA support etc. Currently the 2.71 firmware releases is supported - this means that they have cracked the new encryption methods and developed the operating system hacks necessary to allow unsigned code to run, even in kernel mode.

Epsilon BIOS is being developed for quite some time, but due to the fact that it requires a dual-flash system (one flash is used to bootstrap the code, the other stores the normal PSP firmware) it haven't been released - until now, with the appearance of the Undiluted Platinum modchip. To be able to use the Epsilon BIOS, you'll need to install an undiluted platinum modchip.

As mentioned above, using Epsilon BIOS its possible to launch homebrew software from the memory stick, kernel mode access is also available for software which requires this. Both 1.0 and 1.5 style EBOOTs are supported. UMD ISO loading is almost transparent, simply copy your ISO files into a directory on your Memory Stick and they will appear under "Game -> Memory Stick" in the operating system menu alongside your homebrew applications. Simply launch them from here, no need to use a seperate ISO loader application. Furthermore, since the games are actually running on 2.x firmware you dont need to worry about strange loading methods or patching the ISO files - they will simply work, in their original state.

This new development will truly unleash the full power of your psp but unlike devhook, this installation requires you to install hardware to your psp. There are guides in the internet on how to do it and there are also instructions when you order the mod chip. Nevertheless, installing the chip should be handled by professionals with the right tools. One wrong move could render your psp useless.
